Frequently asked questions

Bursting discs

What is a bursting disc?

A bursting disc is a device that protects installations, apparatus, and process equipment against excessive pressure increases or decreases. These devices perform a similar function to safety valves.

What is a Holder?

Holder is a special mounting flange for bursting discs. Some types of discs (at low pressures) are designed to be mounted directly between flanges (without the need for special holders).

What is a sanitary disc?

This is a special group of discs dedicated to applications in the pharmaceutical, food, and biotechnology industries. The perfectly smooth design prevents process media from adhering to the plate (RA electropolishing). Fike also uses a special, unique, and aseptic packaging method for sanitary discs.

What is the burst pressure of the plate?

The burst pressure of the bursting disc is always adapted to the unique requirements of the installation or device.

What is the breakage tolerance of bursting disc?

The burst tolerance specifies the pressure range within which the bursting disc will open (e.g., +/- 5%, 10% of the assumed nominal burst pressure).

Who inspects the bursting disc on the installation?

Periodic (visual) inspections may be carried out by the user of the installation or a UDT supervisor.

What is the warranty period for bursting discs?

It all depends on the disc model. The warranty period is usually between 12 and 36 months..

Are bursting discs available “off the shelf” (in stock)?

It depends. Bursting discs are usually manufactured to individual customer orders, according to the process parameters of a given installation. The standard delivery time is approx. 3-4 weeks. However, for an additional fee (option: HOT SHOT), it is possible to speed up this process to as little as 2 working days.

What parameters are needed to select a bursting disc?

In order to select the correct bursting disc, the following must be specified:
· burst pressure
· burst temperature (if not specified, it is set to 22°C by default)
· size of the bursting disc and flange class for disc installation
· material from which the bursting disc is to be made
· quantity ordered

How do we install discs?

The installation and operating instructions are always included with the tile shipment. You can see a visualization of how the bursting disc is installed in the system on our  youtube channel.

Service

Should the system be turned off during maintenance work?

Yes, all maintenance work is carried out subject to the suspension of equipment operation.

What is the waiting time for service after a failure/activation?

Our service operates 24 hours a day, every day. We always strive to resolve failures and rebuild the system as quickly as possible.

What is the waiting time for scheduled maintenance?

The standard waiting time for a scheduled inspection is between 72 and 120 hours. The time is counted from the moment the order is placed. However, we always try to arrange the fastest and most convenient date for you. Depending on the type of service contract, a response time of up to 2 hours is also possible.

How often should servicing be performed?

The manufacturer recommends performing inspections depending on the load and working environment. In accordance with the Regulation of the Minister of Development of June 6, 2016, on the requirements for protective devices and systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (Journal of Laws, item 817), the inspection should take place at least once a year.

What is the standard service duration?

It all depends on the size of the installation. For example, for large systems where downtime can last more than 5 days, the service time is usually around 4 hours.

Spark detection and extinguishing

How much does a spark detection system cost?

It all depends on the size of the system. The price is determined after a thorough analysis and obtaining the necessary information from you (specifications of the installation).

What is the warranty period for the spark detection system?

From the moment the installation is commissioned, the warranty period for the detection system is 12 months or longer.

How often should the detection system be serviced?

Every fire protection system should be inspected at least once a year by an authorized service provider. However, to ensure better system performance, it is best to have the system serviced twice a year. This is an individual decision that should be made by the user, taking into account the risks associated with the given technological process.

What are the service costs?

The price for the service is determined individually and depends on the size of the installation and access to its components.

Is training provided after commissioning?

Yes. After the system is installed, the people you designate will receive appropriate training.

Who should be trained?

Ideally, the person responsible for the production process: manager, foreman, team leader, or another employee designated by you.

Where should the system’s control panel be located?

Preferably in the same place as the operator. This will enable quick verification of the message from the control panel.

Do spark detection sensors need to be protected against weather conditions?

There is no need for that. The sensors are mounted on pipelines or chutes, and their design allows them to operate in all weather conditions.

Is it possible to check the system without turning off the dust extraction?

This is not possible. The sensors must be switched off during inspection. If the device is running during inspection, a dangerous situation could arise, and the safety of the inspectors is paramount. Health and safety regulations categorically prohibit working on a device that is switched on.

Are we able to perform turnkey installations?

Yes. If you wish, our engineers will take full responsibility for the comprehensive implementation of all stages of the investment – from design, through the production of key system components, to the assembly and commissioning of the new installation. The offer also includes subsequent servicing.

Flameless relief, explosion vent panles

Is the flameless flame arrestor “FlameQuench” a single-use product?

The device plate is disposable, but depending on the explosion, the damping mesh in the interrupter may need to be replaced.

How long can the system remain installed if there is no explosion?

There is no time limit or expiration date. Replacement may only be necessary due to strong and frequent exposure to atmospheric or process factors. It is good practice to verify and replace basic components after 10 years of operation.

How often should equipment be inspected, and how much does such an inspection cost?

In accordance with the Regulation of the Minister of Development of June 6, 2016, on requirements for protective devices and systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (Journal of Laws, item 817), inspections should be carried out at least once a year. The cost of such an inspection depends on its scope. Please contact our specialists to discuss the details.

Is it possible to replace the HRD system with passive safety measures so that the solution proves to be more economical over a period of, say, 10 years?

It all depends on the installation. In some cases, this option may not be available. It depends on whether it is possible with the given technology. For verification, please contact our specialists, who will select the best possible solutions for you.

What technical data should be provided in order to prepare an offer for explosion protection?

In order to prepare an offer, we need information about the device to be secured, i.e., a technical drawing, a technological diagram, and a description of the technological process. In addition, data on the strength of the device is also necessary – the Pred parameter (reduced pressure). Basic information for us is also what kind of dust is in the installation – its type, Kst parameters (explosivity index) and Pmax (maximum explosion pressure).

Is the explosion vent panel a reusable device?

No, the explosion vent panel is not a reusable device. This is indicated by the name “breakable panel.” Therefore, each time the panel is opened, it must be replaced with a new one.

Do you have explosion vent panels in your warehouse?

As standard, explosion vent panels are divided into those manufactured to individual customer orders and standard panels (available immediately). Due to the number of industrial installations we secure in Poland and neighboring countries, some of the safety plates are kept in our internal warehouse, making them available immediately.

Is the protection provided by the explosion vent panel alone sufficient for my device?

In order to ensure complete safety of the installation, the device should be secured with a flameless system, e.g., a FlamQuench flame arrestor, an active explosion suppression system (HRD cylinder), or by creating a decompression channel that will allow the fireball resulting from the explosion to be released into the atmosphere.

What accessories are available to upgrade safety plates?

Fike, a company we have been working with for many years, offers a wide range of additional components that can be fitted to safety discs. These include, for example, rupture sensors, seals, EX-Cover weather protection, and ArmaFlex thermal protection. You can find the full range of products on our website.

What is the average waiting time for an ordered security plate?

The waiting time depends on the number of discs ordered and their type. Usually, the time needed to complete an order is 5-10 business days. Some discs are available immediately from our warehouse in Poland.

I have a filter at my workplace that has been equipped with a explosion vent panel by the manufacturer. Can I assume that the device is completely safe?

Unfortunately, no. In addition to ensuring explosion relief via a safety plate, the device must also be equipped with an explosion decoupling system (to prevent the explosion from spreading to other parts of the installation). This can be achieved by using a Valvex non-return valve, FAV quick-closing valves, or an active explosion isolation system using SRD cylinders.

I have many bucket conveyors in my plant. Is there a simple and economical way to secure them?

We offer EleGuard explosion vent panel specially designed for bucket conveyors. They are an easy-to-install and economical way to secure bucket conveyors. Please contact our specialists to discuss the details.

I have a device in my plant that is protected by aluminum sheets. Is this solution acceptable?

Absolutely not. According to current regulations, every device that serves as explosion protection must have the appropriate ATEX certification.

I already have a explosion vent panel, but I would like to upgrade it with a tear sensor, for example. Is it possible to upgrade the explosion vent panel without having to replace it with a new one?

Of course. Replacing the panel is not necessary. Each panel purchased can be retrofitted with, for example, a tear sensor or weather cover.

How many layers does a explosion vent panel consist of?

Unlike explosion vent panels from competitors, every Fike panel is a composite panel, i.e., it consists of three layers: stainless steel – Teflon seal – stainless steel. This type of solution significantly affects the service life and durability of the purchased device.

Detectors, valves, transformer protector (transformer protection)

How long is the warranty period for Spectrex 40/40 fire detectors?

Spectrex 40/40 fire detectors come with a 5-year warranty.

Can Spectrex Quasar gas detectors be used to detect ammonia?

Spectrex SafEye Quasar 960 open path detectors detect gases at distances of up to 80 m and can be customized to your individual requirements in order to best protect the life and health of your employees and ensure the durability of high-risk installations. The reliability of this system is guaranteed by SIL 2 certification.

Can Spectrex Quasar gas detectors be used to detect ammonia?

Since the safety of the installation depends on the fire detector, it is important that the detector is selected appropriately. There are several types of detectors – those that “see” in the IR, UV, and UV/IR spectrums. Different media exhibit different spectral activity during a fire. Therefore, a properly selected detector will effectively ensure safety in your facilities.

Can open path gas detectors be used as a substitute for point detectors?

Yes, absolutely. One pair of open-path gas detectors can replace up to several dozen point detectors.

Why is it so important to know all the required parameters when selecting safety valves?

A safety valve is a device that acts as a last line of defense for industrial installations. When all other safety measures fail, the only solution is to release pressure outside the installation. In order for safety valves to be as effective as possible in such cases, they must be selected appropriately. This is possible when all the required parameters are known.

Does the Sergi Transformer Protector solution protect the transformer only against explosion or also during a fire?

The Tranformer Protector system protects the transformer not only during an explosion, but also during a fire. When the transformer starts to burn, the vat is cooled with nitrogen. This makes fire extinguishing extremely effective and fast.

Have any tests been conducted on the Transformer Protector system?

In order to prove the effectiveness of TP, 62 tests were conducted, which proved that TP protected the transformer tank each time, while avoiding permanent deformation.

Is the Transformer Protector system NFPA compliant?

Yes, the TRANSFORMER PROTECTOR system complies with the code of the American National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), NFPA 850.
